چکیده

CORTISONE and hydrocortisone are now widely used in the treatment of ocular inflammations, particularly in allergic conditions such as phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis, scleritis, uveitis, and some kinds of keratitis. In the treatment of diseases in the anterior segment of the eye, an inexpensive topical application in the form of a suspension or ointment may be used with benefit. Such applications seem to have few sideeffects, but Thygeson (1953) calls attention to the fact that cortisone is a double-edged weapon, since, though it may control the inflammation, it may also increase the susceptibility of the individual to micro-organisms. He encountered cases of fungus infection of the cornea after treatment with cortisone.

Corneal thickness in interstitial keratitis.

THE importance of the role played by changes in the thickness of the cornea in the induction of corneal vascularization has recently become increasingly recognized (Cogan, 1948; Ashton, Cook, and Langham, 1951; Langham, 1952, 1953; Ashton and Cook, 1953). However the relationship between the swelling and increase in opacity of the cornea to the rate and progress of vascularization of the cornea...

Inhibition of vascularization in rabbit corneas by heparin: cortisone pellets.

The purpose of this work was to study the effectiveness of heparin plus cortisone, and of cortisone alone in control of corneal vascularization in rabbit eyes. Corneal vascularization was induced by de-epithelialization of the cornea and limbus and part of the bulbar conjunctiva with concurrent trephination and excision of a central 2-mm diameter corneal button. Inhibition of vascularization by...

Effect of cortisone on healing of corneal wounds.

THE evidence that cortisone inhibits wound healing in animals and man through its depressant action upon fibroblastic activity has already been reviewed (Duke-Elder and Ashton, 1951), but this conclusion might not apply equally to repair-processes in the non-vascularized tissue of the cornea, in which the metabolism is peculiar and the structure unique. The following experiments were therefore ...
